Our Beliefs and Values

We aim to sustain and continue to develop a community based on positive attitudes, the promotion of excellence and the celebration of achievement. We are committed to providing an inclusive environment in which all children and young people, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), are valued, respected and supported to achieve their full potential.

We recognise that every child is unique and that some pupils may require additional or different support at different stages of their education. We aim to identify individual needs at the earliest opportunity and provide appropriate, high-quality support which enables pupils to access the curriculum, participate fully in school life and make the best possible progress.

We believe that successful provision for pupils with SEND is built upon strong partnerships between pupils, parents and carers, school staff and external professionals. We are committed to listening to the views of children and their families and working collaboratively to ensure that provision is responsive to individual strengths and needs.

Our aim is for every child to feel safe, included and successful, developing the confidence, independence and skills they need for the next stage of their education and their future lives.

The school supports this aim by:

  1. Identifying and providing for pupils who have special educational needs and additional needs.
  2. Working within the guidance provided in the SEND Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years.
  3. Operating a “whole pupil, whole school” approach to the management and provision of support for special educational needs.
  4. Providing a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) who will work with the relevant policies.
  5. Providing support and advice for all staff working with special educational needs pupils.
  6. Working with parents and carers to identify and meet children's needs.
  7. Monitoring pupil progress using Termly Support Plans.
  8. Working in co-operation with the LA and other agencies.
  9. Involving children in planning support and reviewing progress.

The following policies should be read in conjunction:

Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy

Anti-Bullying Policy

Health and Safety Policy

SEND Policy

What types of SEND do we provide for?

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social, emotional and mental health
  • Sensory and/or physical needs

What should I do if I think my child has SEND?

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress or well-being, then please speak to either your child’s class teacher or Mr Baxter (Headteacher) or Mrs Milson (SENCO). Please e-mail the school at barmbymoor.primary@eastriding.gov.uk.

How do we identify, evaluate, assess and review children with SEND?

Teachers will monitor the progress pupils are making through:

  • observations during lessons
  • termly curriculum tracking and assessments

When a class teacher feels a child is having difficulties accessing the curriculum, the class teacher will arrange to meet parents or carers to discuss support currently in place and possible future support. The class teacher will raise their concerns with the school SENCO and, where appropriate, further assessments may be undertaken to help identify the pupil's needs and the support required.

Through the above discussions, if it is agreed that the child would benefit from further support, suitable resources and interventions will be identified to address areas of difficulty; this will then be recorded on the school's SEND Register at 'SEND Support'. This will outline the areas of concern and will identify the additional support that is required. A Termly Support Plan will then be completed at a meeting with the class teacher, pupil and parents/carers. There are at least 3 Termly Support Plan meetings for children with SEND, however class teachers are always available to discuss the progress and support for SEND children with relevant parents/carers throughout the school year. The school SENCO are also available to discuss the progress and support of SEND children.

Your child’s progress will be monitored continuously throughout the year. Every term, formal assessments will be completed in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Maths. Results are discussed at Pupil Progress Meetings, alongside teacher judgements, with the SENCO and class teachers. Relevant interventions are then identified to support pupils to make progress towards identified outcomes.

The school also has a contract with an external SEND Advisory Teacher (Fiona Riley - ACORN), who is available to provide additional guidance and strategies to help support children in school. They are in a position to carry out particular testing to identify more specific conditions/learning difficulties. The school will also communicate with external agencies e.g. Speech and Language, Educational Psychologist to seek further advice.

Every term, SEND Termly Support Plan targets are reviewed by class teachers and a meeting takes place with parents/carers to discuss progress and next steps. Children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan will have an annual review to consider their progress, review their needs and provision, and agree appropriate outcomes and next steps. This meeting will involve staff from school and external agencies. If following a review, it is decided that a child no longer requires the additional support, the child will be removed from the SEND Register, however monitoring will still take place to ensure the child continues to make the required progress

What if my child requires an EHCP?

If a child continues to experience significant difficulties or does not make expected progress despite the school taking relevant and purposeful action to identify, assess and meet their special educational needs, we may consider requesting an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment.

In deciding whether a request for an EHC needs assessment may be appropriate, we will consider the nature and extent of the child's needs, the progress they are making, the support and interventions that have already been provided and the impact of this support. We will work closely with parents/carers, the child and, where appropriate, relevant external professionals throughout this process.

Having a diagnosis, for example Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or dyslexia, does not automatically mean that a child requires an EHCP. Equally, a child does not need to have a formal diagnosis for an EHC needs assessment to be considered. The key consideration is the individual child's special educational needs and whether the provision they require can be appropriately met through SEN Support or may require provision to be made through an EHCP.

An EHC needs assessment is undertaken by the Local Authority and does not automatically result in an EHCP. Following the assessment, the Local Authority will decide whether it is necessary for the child's special educational provision to be made through an EHCP.

Parents and carers also have the right to request an EHC needs assessment directly from the Local Authority.

What support do we offer at Barmby Moor CE Primary School?

Day to day lessons are made accessible for all by using a number of strategies including use of different resources, use of additional adults and different tasks.

The school offers interventions that are planned by class teachers covering core skills to support children to make progress; these interventions are led by either the class teacher or members of support staff through individual or small group activities. These interventions are linked to the targets on individual Termly Support Plans. We also offer Read Write Inc individual tutoring to support essential reading skills.

How do we support pupils with SEND with their social and emotional development?

To support children's social and emotional wellbeing, the school has a trained ELSA lead who plans individual sessions, taking place in our dedicated ELSA room.

Barmby Moor CE Primary School has an allocated room set up to provide quiet support for children with SEND.

How is teaching adapted for pupils with SEND?

Teachers plan lessons carefully to ensure that all pupils, including those with SEND, are able to access learning and make progress. Teaching is adapted according to individual needs and may include the use of scaffolding, adapted resources, visual prompts and supports, additional modelling or explanation, and additional processing time. Where appropriate, pupils may receive pre-teaching of key vocabulary or concepts and targeted support within lessons. Small-group or individual teaching may also be provided where this will help a pupil to develop particular skills or address an identified area of need. Reasonable adjustments are made to enable pupils with SEND to participate fully in lessons and wider school life. The support provided is regularly reviewed and adapted in response to each pupil's progress and changing needs.

What other people and organisations provide support to our school?

We work with a wide range of different support agencies including: the Educational Psychology Team, Behavioural Support, Speech and Language service, Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS), Youth Support Workers, Education Service for Physical Disability (ESPD), Integrated Sensory Support Service, Social Care and Occupational Therapy.

What training have staff received?

We are committed to ensuring that staff have the knowledge, skills and confidence to effectively support pupils with SEND. Staff receive regular SEND training as part of our ongoing programme of professional development. This includes training linked to specific areas of need, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). SEND training and professional development are regularly completed in collaboration with our federated school, Garton on the Wolds CE Primary School, enabling staff across the Federation to share expertise and develop consistent approaches to supporting pupils with additional needs.

Staff have also undertaken training in areas including the effective development and use of Termly Support Plans, Read Write Inc. individual support, assessment and strategies to support pupils in mathematics. Where a pupil has a particular or more complex need, additional training and advice may be sought from relevant external professionals and specialist services. Training needs are reviewed regularly to ensure that staff are equipped to respond effectively to the needs of the pupils in our school.

What support is available for parents/carers of children with SEND?

We follow an open-door approach where parents/carers are always welcome to come into school. A child's progress can be discussed either at a face to face meeting or by a telephone consultation. The Headteacher is also often at the entrance to school at the start of the day to answer any questions parents/carers may have.

Where required, the school will also either seek or signpost parents/carers to additional support through outside agencies to support the specific needs of individual pupils.

How is our school accessible to children with SEND?

Barmby Moor CE Primary School is committed to providing an inclusive environment in which all pupils, including those with SEND and disabilities, are able to participate fully in school life. Our admissions arrangements do not discriminate against pupils with SEND or disabilities and we work closely with parents, carers and relevant professionals to understand and respond to individual needs.

Reasonable adjustments are made, where required, to ensure that disabled pupils are not placed at a substantial disadvantage compared with their peers. These adjustments are considered according to the individual needs of each pupil and may include adaptations to teaching and learning, the use of specialist or adapted resources, additional adult support, changes to routines or the physical environment, and arrangements to support access to educational visits, clubs and other aspects of school life.

We regularly consider the accessibility of our curriculum, physical environment and information provided to pupils and families. Where a pupil has a specific physical, sensory or medical need, we work with parents/carers and appropriate external professionals to identify any additional adaptations, equipment or support that may be required.

Our Accessibility Plan sets out how we continue to improve access to the curriculum, the physical environment and information for pupils with disabilities. This is reviewed regularly to ensure that we continue to identify and remove potential barriers to participation and learning.

What school facilities are available for children with SEND?

We aim for each classroom area to be a calm and nurturing learning space where all children can learn and progress. In each classroom, resources and strategies are available to specific pupils, which have been recommended on reports received from outside agencies.

The school also has a dedicated ELSA room and a quiet intervention room which can be used to support individual needs as needed.

How do we support children during transitions to another setting or school?

Transition meetings are timetabled as needed. In Year 6, meetings take place between the teachers and pupils at Barmby Moor and with the feeder secondary schools. At these meetings, relevant data, attendance information, termly support plans and pastoral information is shared.

In EYFS, transition meetings are arranged with parents/carers and previous settings before a child starts Reception in September.

For in-school transitions, the school has systems in place to ensure that class teachers are aware of specific needs of pupils and their next steps. These include:

  • Transition Meetings to discuss individual pupils
  • Open Afternoons for parents to meet the new class teacher
  • Move up morning for pupils to meet their new teacher
  • New class teachers visiting upcoming pupils in their current classroom to read story/participate in activities

Where required, enhanced transition arrangements will be put in place for pupils with SEND or those who may find periods of transition particularly challenging. These arrangements will be tailored to the individual needs of the pupil and may include additional visits, opportunities to meet key members of staff, photographs or visual information about the new environment, transition activities and additional communication between parents/carers, school staff and other settings. For pupils transferring to secondary school, we will work closely with the receiving school to share relevant information and ensure that appropriate support and reasonable adjustments can be planned in advance. Our aim is to make transitions as positive, well-planned and reassuring as possible for every pupil.

What should I do if I have a concern or complaint about SEND provision?

We aim to work closely with parents and carers to resolve any concerns about the support provided for pupils with SEND. In the first instance, parents/carers are encouraged to speak with their child’s class teacher or the school SENCO. If concerns remain, these can be discussed with the Headteacher. Where a concern cannot be resolved informally, parents/carers can follow the school’s formal Complaints Policy, which is available on the school website.
