French
Intent
Through our teaching of MfL, we aim to create a love of exploring language. By learning about another language, our pupils will also be developing a deeper understanding of the construction of their own language. These skills will be transferrable across languages and we intend children to make links between languages. Children will develop the confidence to be able to communicate outside of their native tongue. For some of our pupils, this will be an additional language to English which is already their second language, it is our intention that this will be celebrated and connections between language and cultures will be explored. Not only will the lessons build on a love of the language, but it is important for children to learn about daily life and culture and begin to develop an appreciation and understanding of similarities and differences between the lives of other communities around the world.
Implementation
Each session will build on the skills and knowledge of the children within the class. Over a series of sessions, children will have opportunity to develop their skills in: listening, reading, speaking and writing. The main language taught through our curriculum is French, as one of our closest European neighbours we feel that this is an important language to develop. This is also developed further when pupils from our school move on to our local secondary school. Our long term plans focus on a range of topics which will enable our children to develop and encounter a range of vocabulary and typical situations which they may encounter.
Impact
Our pupils understand that language has clear structures and they are beginning to make links between their own native language and others. We assess our pupils in all four areas of skills and we lay the foundations for future language learning. Children leave with an enthusiasm for learning languages and about other cultures. They have the confidence and skills to engage in conversation when they meet native speakers.
